Breathwork for Beginners: Your Guide to Pranayama
Breath is the bridge between body and mind. In yoga, we call the practice of breath control "pranayama"—the extension and regulation of life force.
Why Breathwork Matters
Our breath is always with us, yet most of us breathe unconsciously. By bringing awareness to our breathing, we can:
Three Techniques to Start With
1. Dirga Pranayama (Three-Part Breath)
Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest. Inhale deeply, filling your belly first, then ribs, then upper chest. Exhale in reverse order.
2. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
Using your thumb and ring finger, alternate closing each nostril as you breathe. This balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
3. Ujjayi (Victorious Breath)
Constrict the back of your throat slightly as you breathe, creating an ocean-like sound. This breath is often used during asana practice.
Start with just 5 minutes a day and gradually increase your practice.
